MINNEAPOLIS – Former Gopher Baseball standouts Terrin Vavra and Eli Wilson have been named MiLB Organization All-Stars, as announced by Minor League Baseball. Vavra is a shortstop in the Colorado Rockies organization, while Wilson is a catcher within the Pittsburgh Pirates system.
Vavra, a 2018 third round draft selection, made headlines earlier this year after coming home with South Atlantic League MVP honors. In 2019, Vavra slashed .318/.409/.489 with 10 homers, 32 doubles, 79 runs, 52 RBI and 18 steals for the Class-A Asheville Tourists.
Following the impressive sophomore campaign, the Rockies moved Vavra to No. 7 on their organizational prospect rankings. Vavra was also featured by GopherSports after his exceptional season at the plate in 2019.
Wilson was chosen by the Pirates in the 16th round of the MLB Draft this past June. In his first taste of professional baseball action, Wilson batted .234/.356/.366 with four homers, seven doubles, 31 runs and 20 RBI across 145 at bats for the Rookie-level Bristol Pirates.
In 360 1/3 innings behind the dish, the first-year backstop committed just three errors, good for an exceptional .993 fielding percentage. On top of that, Wilson threw out 39% of would-be basestealers. Wilson, the son of former MLB catcher Dan Wilson, was also featured earlier this year by GopherSports.
In being named 2019 MiLB Organization All-Stars, Vavra and Wilson now appear to be on the fast track to becoming the next former Gophers to reach the big leagues. To date, 35 Gopher Baseball products have made it to the Major Leagues.
