Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz clocked the two fastest 5,000-meter times in Minnesota history on Saturday.
BOSTON -- Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz clocked two of the fastest 5,000-meter times in NCAA history as the duo raced at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday afternoon.
B. Hasz finished fifth in 15:25.33 and M. Hasz took 12th in 15:39.03 as both improved on the previous Minnesota indoor program record set by M. Hasz at 15:51.55 last season. Not including other performances in the same race, B. Hasz's time ranks 14th in NCAA history while M. Hasz lands 41st all-time. The duo also bested their own outdoor 5,000-meter career best times where B. Hasz holds the Gophers' outdoor record at 15:45.72 and M. Hasz ranks second in Minnesota history at 15:58.85.
"Obviously it was a strategic decision to redshirt Megan and Bethany this fall, and they've been training pretty much all fall for this race," distance coach Sarah Hopkins said. "We knew they were in pretty good shape to run fast. They did a little time trial a couple weeks ago, and it went really well, but they haven't really raced hard since the national meet in track last spring. It's always kind of hard to go to the well for the first time, especially in a field like this. They did a really good job of staying composed. The results obviously speak for themselves.
"For Bethany to be the 14th-best performer in NCAA history indoors, it's just wild to think about. Even Megan, the 41st-best time in the NCAA. It's super fun to watch and be a part of as a coach. It's so fun to have two athletes like that who train hard and do things right. They know how to play the game now, and your'e just seeing their careers get better and better every single year as they've matured. This is the result when you get in a good field and you let them run."
Members of the team also competed at the SDSU Holiday Invite and Multi this weekend where the Maroon & Gold took home 17 event titles. The Gophers are back in action when they host the Minnesota Open on Saturday, Jan. 11. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. CT at the newly renovated Minnesota Fieldhouse.
