2/16/2019 12:01:00 AM | Gymnastics
The Minnesota Women's Gymnastics team finished out a five-week stretch of conference dual meets tonight with a 196.850-195.325 win over Maryland to give the team an undefeated record of 5-0 in the Big Ten. The Gophers improve to an overall record of 9-2 on the season as they post their second-highest score in 2019.
Maryland led after the first rotation, having posted a team uneven bars score of 49.250 whereas the Gophers combined for a team vault score of 49.125. Minnesota took over the top spot in the second rotation as the No. 9 in the NCAA uneven bars squad earned a whopping team event score of 49.525. During the third rotation the Gophers extended their lead to almost a full point over Maryland (.975) as the beam team scored a 49.250 on the event. Minnesota confirmed the win with their 48.950 team performance on floor.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We had another great night, some fabulous routines, and bars was just amazing. I'm just really proud of the way the team continues to get better each week."
Tonight's uneven bars team score was a school record for the Gophers as 49.525 becomes the best mark in program history. The previous best score was a 49.450 at California in 2018. All six gymnasts either posted a new career-high score on the event or matched their previous personal best. Ivy Lu earned a 9.975 on bars for the third time in her career and once again tied the school record.
"We hit every routine, and, even more impressively, I think we stuck every dismount, which is huge," Hansen commented. "I think that's why we ended up with the school record. It was a pretty amazing night on bars."
Ramler blew the crowd away as she too set a new school record in the individual all-around competition, earning an astounding 39.725. Her score surpasses the previous record of 39.675 set by Lindsay Mable against Nebraska back in 2015. Ramler scored a 9.900 or higher on all four apparatuses and earned a pair of 9.950s to achieve this feat.
"It hasn't quite hit me yet, but I'm sure that when it does it's going to feel really great," said Ramler about her accomplishment tonight. "I've worked really hard, so to have this is awesome."
"She was fabulous tonight," Hansen added. "Really, every event was probably the best she's done all year long. It was great to see her do what she does every day in the gym."
Another high note of tonight's competition was seeing two judges flash the perfect 10 for Gophers gymnasts as one judge gave the coveted score to Lu for her uneven bars routine and the other awarded the 10 to Ramler for her performance on the balance beam.
