SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a rematch of last year's NCAA Super Regional, the Gopher Baseball team dropped its second in a row with eighth-ranked Oregon State knocking off Minnesota 13-1 at the College Baseball Classic at Surprise Stadium.
Minnesota (1-2) took an early lead in the top of the first when Eli Wilson doubled home Max Meyer, but the Beavers were quick to answer with two in the bottom of the frame. They did even more damage in the fourth when slugger Adley Rutschman capped a five-run inning with a grand slam to center field to put No. 8 Oregon State (3-0) up for good.
The home run chased Sam Thoresen (0-1) from the game. The right-hander came out strong collecting three strikeouts in the first inning and four total in 3.1 innings of work. Nolan Burchill relieved Thoresen in the fourth, making his first appearance since May 2, 2017 after missing all of 2018 following surgery. He worked 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on a pair of hits while striking out two.
"It felt really good to get back out there with the guys. It's been a long time coming," Burchill said following the game. "Obviously, we didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good to get my feet wet again."
Sam Tweedt tossed the first 4.2 innings for Oregon State, handing the ball to Nathan Burns (1-0) in the fifth. Burns pitched 3.1 hitless innings, striking out four Gophers.
Max Meyer went 2-for-4 on the day to lead Minnesota offensively. Rutschman finished 2-for-3 with two walks, four RBIs and four runs scored to lead the Beavers.
QUOTABLE
"We just have to learn from every experience we have and continue to build. It's early in the season. We're a northern team, and getting these at-bats and these live appearances will only help us down the road." – Nolan Burchill on growing from defeat
NOTABLE
Bubba Horton struck out four of the seven batters he faced in 1.2 innings of work … Cole McDevitt collected a hit in his fifth-straight game dating back to last season … Minnesota lost two in a row just three times in 2018 and never had a losing streak of three or more games. The Gophers will try to continue that trend on Monday.
UP NEXT
Minnesota will close out their stay at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise on Monday as the Gophers take on Gonzaga for the second time this season. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. MT.
