Six Gophers Named to All-WCHA Teams

Grace Zumwinkle leads the Gophers as an All-WCHA First Team selection for the second-straight year.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Six Golden Gophers have been named to the 2018-19 All-WCHA Teams, Powered by GoodWood Hockey, and 17 representatives from the University of Minnesota have been recognized as WCHA All-Academic Team honorees, the Women's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) announced today.
Grace Zumwinkle, Nicole Schammel, Emily Brown, Kelly Pannek, Patti Marshall, and Taylor Heise are among the All-WCHA honorees with Zumwinkle leading the way as a First Team honoree for the second-straight year. Schammel and Brown each earned their first All-WCHA nods of their careers, landing on the All-WCHA Second Team, while Pannek picked up her second All-WCHA award with a spot on this year's All-WCHA Third Team. Marshall, a fellow Third Team honoree, joined Schammel and Brown in receiving her first career All-WCHA honor, and Heise rounded out Minnesota's honorees on the WCHA All-Rookie Team.
Zumwinkle tied for the WCHA lead with 13 goals in 24 league games; she is also tied for fifth in the country with 23 goals in 34 regular-season games.
Meanwhile, Schammel tied for the WCHA scoring title with 27 points (10g-17a) in 24 league games. She led the WCHA and ranked 11th in the nation with a career-high 42 points in 34 games.
Brown is tied for the WCHA lead and sixth in the nation with 25 points (4g-21a) in 34 regular-season games; she excelled on the power play for the top-ranked Gophers, leading the WCHA with 10 points and nine assists on the skater advantage in league play.
Pannek finished the regular season with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists in WCHA play and 27 points (14g-13a) in 32 games overall, and Marshall was the Gophers' second-leading scorer among defense this season, tallying 14 points (1g-13a) in league play and 21 points (2g-19a) in 34 regular season games total. Her +24 rating was also second among all WCHA blueliners this season.
Heise earned a spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team after leading all WCHA newcomers in assists (15), power play assists (six), power play points (seven) and game-winning goals (3) in league games. Nationally, Heise is tied for fifth in the nation with 1.03 points per game, posting 35 points (13g-22a) in 34 regular-season games.
"We are proud of all of our All-WCHA honorees for their athletic and academic success," WCHA Vice President and Women's League Commissioner Katie Million said. "Once again, our student-athletes have shown on and off the ice why the WCHA is the premier league in women's college hockey."
Showcasing the league's depth and youth, freshmen and sophomores accounted for two of six All-WCHA First Team selections, and nine of 18 spots overall.
The 2018-19 WCHA Offensive Player, Defensive Player, Goaltender, Rookie, Outstanding Student-Athlete and Coach of the Year will be announced March 4. The overall WCHA Player of the Year will be recognized on March 7.
