Duo Picks Up WCHA Monthly Honors

Grace Zumwinkle and Sophie Skarzynski earned WCHA Player of the Month awards for January 2019.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Sophomore forward Grace Zumwinkle and senior defense Sophie Skarzynski have been honored as WCHA Player of the Month, Powered by GoodWood Hockey, for January 2019. Zumwinkle picked up her third monthly award of her career, taking home WCHA Forward of the Month accolades, while Skarzynski earned her first WCHA Defense of the Month nod after the Golden Gophers recorded a 7-1-0 record during the month of January.
Zumwinkle (8g-4a) and Skarzynski (1g-4a) helped Minnesota record a WCHA-best .875 winning percentage during January. The duo contributed to Minnesota's average of 4.75 goals per game and helped the team score 38 total goals during the month, both tops among WCHA teams. They helped the Gophers lead the WCHA by outscoring opponents 38-14 for a +3.00 scoring margin and post a league-best .348 power play percentage (8-for-23) over the last month as well.
On the way to her WCHA Forward of the Month award, Zumwinkle led the WCHA with 12 points, eight goals, 1.00 goals per game, 1.50 points per game, three power-play goals, and four power-play points during January. Zumwinkle scored three of Minnesota's league-best eight power-play goals during January, and she was tied for third in the WCHA with a +10 plus/minus rating in January with only Gopher teammates ranked above her.
Zumwinkle had three goals in the Minnesota Cup, leading Minnesota to a 4-3 overtime win over UMD (Jan. 5) and a 5-1 win over St. Cloud State (Jan. 6) and was named Minnesota Cup Most Outstanding Player. She was named WCHA Forward of the Week after recording four points (3g-1a) in a road sweep at Ohio State as well. Zumwinkle had multiple points in four of eight games during January, logging at least one point in seven of eight games for the Gophers.
Meanwhile, Skarzynski was tied for second among WCHA defense with five points during January. She led NCAA and WCHA defense with a plus-15 plus/minus rating for the month. Skarzynski had at least one point in four of eight games during January. Defensively, Skarzynski helped the Gophers allow just 14 goals during January for a team 1.75 goals against average, good for second in the league during the month.
Zumwinkle, Skarzynski, and the Gophers are off from competition this weekend before returning to action at Ridder Arena the following week when the team hosts Minnesota State in its final home series of the regular season. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. CT Friday, Feb. 15 and 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday, Feb. 16.
