DALLAS – A day after awarding the Gopher Baseball team the No. 27 national ranking, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) bestowed Preseason All-America honors on a pair of Minnesota pitchers – sophomore starting pitcher Patrick Fredrickson and relief pitcher Max Meyer.

The NCBWA tabbed each of the Gophers hurlers to the organization's Second Team. Fredrickson has been a second Team selection across three entities: Perfect Game, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and most recently the Baseball Writers, while D1Baseball named him a Third Team selection. Meyer earned his second Second Team selection while D1Baseball named him a First Team selection and Collegiate Baseball a Third Team pick.

Fredrickson will continue to be an anchor in Minnesota's starting staff this season after posting a 9-0 record and 1.68 ERA in his rookie campaign. The right-hander from Gig Harbor, Washington collected 73 punch outs in 97.0 innings. He ranked 12th nationally in ERA and in the top 50 across NCAA with his 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits allowed per nine innings. The NCBWA named him its National Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2018.

Meyer will expand his role with the Gophers, playing in the field as well as closing out games in 2019. He had no trouble adapting to the collegiate game on the mound as a rookie, collecting a Minnesota program-record 16 saves in 26 appearances. He struck out 54 batters while walking just 13, tossing 32.2 innings to the tune of a 2.06 ERA and 2-3 record. Opponents batted just .163 against the right-hander from Woodbury, Minnesota last season, and he allowed just 0.94 baserunners per inning. His 16 saves also ranked third in all of NCAA Division I.

The NCBWA ranked the Gophers No. 27 on Monday in their Preseason Poll, the fourth entity to give Minnesota a national ranking. Baseball America rated the Maroon & Gold the highest at No. 24, while Perfect Game matched NCBWA at No. 27, and CBN at No. 28. Minnesota also received the third-highest vote total among those outside the top 25 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll this preseason.

The Gophers' 2019 schedule includes match-ups with teams featuring eight players from NCBWA's All-America selections. Minnesota opens the season next Friday, Feb. 15 against a fellow NCAA Tournament team from 2018 in Gonzaga at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
