Tucson, Ariz.- The No. 23/RV University of Minnesota Gophers topped Drake 2-0 behind an Amber Fiser one-hit shutout and smashed six home runs in a 12-1 six inning victory over Kent State this afternoon.
"Today we had two good wins to start the Arizona tournament," head coach Jamie Trachsel said. "We had strong pitching performances from Amber Fiser and Sydney Smith. The defense was solid and we had timely hitting in our first game with the offense opening up in the second game. It was a great job by our hitters being patient, attacking their strike zones and driving the ball to all fields."
The Gophers' six home runs is one shy of the Big Ten record for most in a game and according to the Big Ten historical record book is the most in program history for Minnesota.
"We got our offense working," Katelyn Kemmetmueller said. "It's really fun when one through nine is hitting. It's exciting to see all those home runs in a row. The boom at the end is fun."
The Gophers move to 9-5 on the season and will play two more tomorrow. They take on Drake at 12:15 p.m. CT with No. 12/12 Arizona at 5 p.m. CT. In nine wins, Minnesota has outscored opponents 73-2.
Game 1: Minnesota 2, Drake 0
The Gophers scored their first run in the second after a well executed string of at bats. Kemmetmueller made it on base and moved to second on an Emma Burns sacrifice bunt. Allie Arneson drove in Kemmetmueller right after on an RBI single.
Fiser dominated the game from the start and at one point had six straight strikeouts. She finished the game with a career high 12 strikeouts and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.
Natalie DenHartog added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with a home run to dead center. The freshman from Hopkins, Minn. now has four home runs on the season.
Fiser moves to 5-4 on the season and helped Minnesota record their seventh shutout of the early season. She has a 1.54 ERA with 71 strikeouts this year. Arneson went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI while Kemmetmueller went 2-3 and scored a run.
Game 2: Minnesota 12, Kent State 1
The Gophers got off to a quick start scoring two runs in the first inning. MaKenna Partain kicked the inning off with a double. Hope Brandner made it 2-0 with her fifth home run of the year later in the frame.
Sydney Smith put down the Golden Eagles in order to keep the Gophers 2-0 lead.
Arneson was hit by a pitch to advance to first in the top of the second. With two outs on the board, Partain stepped up to the plate and recorded her second double of the game, this time scoring Arneson and putting Minnesota up 3-0.
Kent State put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the second with two outs and saw their first run of the game come after a single to center. They were threatening to tack on more but Smith settled back in to get out of trouble and keep them off the board for the remainder of the game.
The Minnesota bats blew up in the fifth inning with three home runs. Partain nailed a solo shot to go along with her already impressive game, Brandner hit her second of the game and lyn Kemmetmueller hit her first career homer to score two. Six Gophers have hit their first career home run this season. The hot frame put Minnesota up 7-1.
Minnesota tacked on five more runs in the sixth. Ali Lindner kicked it off with a solo-shot to right field for her second of the season. Maddie Houlihan and Partain got on base and were sent home by a Brandner single.
