Minnesota awaits its NCAA tournament fate after falling to Wisconsin 3-1 in the league title game.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's hockey team fell to Wisconsin by a score of 3-1 in the WCHA Final Faceoff championship game Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota (30-5-1) awaits its NCAA tournament fate as the NCAA Selection Show is set for 8 p.m. CT Sunday evening and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com. With the WCHA postseason championship, Wisconsin (32-4-2) received the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament
"I thought it was an entertaining game," head coach Brad Frost said. "Unfortunately not the outcome we wanted, but we credit and congratulate Wisconsin on the win. Our team wanted that one really bad. You could tell as the game went on that the desperation continued and elevated. We started a little slower than we wanted to, but overall I'm really proud of our team and we will take that into next week."
Minnesota got its lone goal from Grace Zumwinkle and received 22 saves from goaltender Sydney Scobee. Wisconsin outshot the Maroon & Gold, 25-21, for the game, and Kristen Campbell posted 20 saves for the Badgers.
The Badgers got on the board first with a goal by Caitlin Schneider at the 8:11 mark of the first period before extending its lead to two early in the second period when Britta Curl scored the eventual game-winner at the 2:41 mark of the middle frame.
Zumwinkle responded midway through the period, capitalizing on Minnesota's second power play of the game with her team-leading 25th goal and seventh power-play goal of the season. She buried a feed from Emily Brown and Nicole Schammel to cut Wisconsin's lead to one.
The third period saw Minnesota pressure and outshoot the Badgers, 9-5, but UW sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from Annie Pankowski with 1:05 remaining after the Gophers pulled Scobee for the extra attacker.
The Gophers went one-for-three on the power play while holding the Badgers scoreless on their lone power play of the game.
Looking ahead to the NCAA Tournament, CHA champion Syracuse (13-21-3), ECAC Hockey champion Clarkson (29-7-2), Hockey East champion Northeastern (27-5-5), and WCHA champion Wisconsin (32-4-2) make up the four teams earning automatic bids into the NCAA postseason. The remaining four teams in the eight-team field, along with the quarterfinal match-ups and hosts, will be announced live on NCAA.com on Sunday evening.
