Senior Justin Karstadt started his spring break off at the University of Calgary International Cup in Calgary, AB. with a night full of success.

Karstadt represented his native Team Canada in the event on Friday, which was a dual meet against Team USA and Team Canada. He was originally slated to compete individually, but an injury opened up a spot for Team Canada. Karstadt made the most of the chance and placed third all-around (81.450) and finished on the podium for pommel horse (14.175) and rings (13.675).

"Justin stepped up big time when the opportunity to fill in for Team Canada presented itself. The team battle between Canada and USA was close throughout, and Justin has a big part in Canada's success," head coach Mike Burns said. "Finishing third in the all-around was a huge accomplishment as he initiates the process to become an important cog in Team Canada's pursuit of a berth at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo."

Karstadt started his day off on floor, where he scored a 13.400 and was just held off the podium in fourth place. The score was Karstadt's second-best of the year as he's returned to all-around competition after a year off.

Next up for Justin was pommel horse. Currently ranked No. 10 nationally, he scored a 14.175, which was good for third place and his second-best mark of the year.

He kept up the consistency on rings, where he recorded a 13.675 and claimed the silver. It's been a solid couple of weeks for Karstadt on the event as he set a new season high at Ohio State March 8 with a score of 14.250 and also placed second.

Justin claimed a pair of fourth-place finishes on the next two events, vault and parallel bars. He scored a 13.950 on vault and 13.900 on parallel bars.

He closed out the day on high bar, where he recorded a 12.350 for seventh place.

Karstadt will move on to the event finals on Saturday evening and qualified in four: floor, pommel horse, rings and parallel bars.

Former Gophers captain Joel Gagnon ('18) also participated in the event in the senior division and won the all-around title (74.150). A two-time All-American on the event, Gagnon finished in second place on floor (13.250) and took the parallel bars crown (13.725).
