Kasiski, Wiskus Earn B1G, CGA Weekly Awards
3/19/2019 3:03:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics
The Minnesota men's gymnastics team started spring break off with a clean sweep of the college gymnastics weekly awards. Garrett Kasiski and Shane Wiskus were named both the Big Ten and College Gymnastics Association Freshman and Gymnast of the week, the conference announced Tuesday. It's the first Big Ten honor of Kasiski's career, and Wiskus's third Gymnast of the Week award this season. It is also the second-straight award for Shane.
Honors for both gymnasts come after solid performances in Minnesota's St. Patrick's Day dual victory over Air Force.
"I'm just thrilled that we were able to sweep both the Big Ten and CGA weekly awards," head coach Mike Burns said. "Shane continues on his upward-trending performances, and Garrett was a wonderful surprise this week with his first time in the lineup on vault. He goes out and does a fantastic handspring double front to win the event."
Kasiski, a Chesapeake, Va. native, had the best meet of his young career on Sunday. As the lineup was adjusted a bit, Kasiski was able to compete in three events: floor, rings and vault. He had previously appeared in the floor and rings lineup, but it was his first time vaulting: And it was one to remember.
Kasiski stepped up in the No. 3 spot and delivered a stuck vault that set a new career and team season high of 14.900. It was enough to win him the event title, the first of his career. The score is also the second-highest in the Big Ten and nationally this season.
Garrett also had success on rings in just his third-ever college outing. He scored a 13.200 on the event to come in third place.
Wiskus has continued to steadily improve each week, which has led to consecutive Big Ten and CGA plaudits. His strong points of the Air Force meet were on both bar sets. Shane took to the parallel bars first, where he is ranked No. 3 nationally. He delivered a stuck set of 14.900 to set a new personal high, team season high and win him the event title.
The mark on parallel bars is the best of any Big Ten gymnast this season on the event and is the third-best nationally. The sophomore, a Spring Park, Minn. native, also set his previous career high at Maturi Pavilion.
Next up was high bar, with Wiskus as the day's final competitor, and he broke his personal record on the event for the third week in a row. He set a new high of 14.200 during Minnesota's Feb. 9 home meet, and has recorded a new high in all but one of the Gophers' four meets since.
This time out, Shane earned a 14.400 for the event title, which is also a team season high, the third-highest score in the Big Ten and fifth-highest nationally. Wiskus is also ranked No. 3 on high bar.
The Gophers now have seven Big Ten weekly awards under their belt this season, with Wiskus earning three Gymnast of the Week honors and Kasiski, Mike Moran, David Pochinka and Eric Nakamura all earning freshman awards.
Kasiski and Wiskus will be back in action this weekend at Maturi Pavilion as the No. 6 Gophers take on No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Iowa for the last meet of the regular season. It will also be Minnesota's last chance at claiming the first-ever Big Ten Regular Season Championship. The Gophers will honor their six seniors Saturday for Senior Day, and it will also be Club Day at the Pav. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m.
