3/20/2019 9:08:00 PM | Softball
GAINESVILLE, FLA.- The No. 20/19 Â University of Minnesota Gophers fell to No. 6/7 Florida 2-0 this evening. With the loss, the Gophers drop to 19-9 overall.Â
The difference of the game came down to one swing of the bat in the first inning that went Florida's way. After the leadoff batter was walked, they got on the board with a two-shot home run.Â
The Gophers offense came out aggressive and put runners in scoring position in both the first and second inning but were never able to scrape a run across. Maddie Houlihan singled in the first and advanced to third on a Natalie DenHartog single. Denhartog then stole second but both runners were left stranded.Â
Allie Arneson led off the second with a walk and Taylor Chell was later hit by a pitch but again Florida was able to get out unscathed.Â
Amber Fiser got the nod in the circle and went six innings with seven strikeouts. She pitched out of a number of jams leaving nine Florida runners on base in the game. The Gators put runners on first and second in both the fourth and fifth innings but Fiser was able to keep the Gophers in the game by getting out of trouble both times.Â
Arneson recorded the only other hit of the game for Minnesota in the third inning with a single to center. Hope Brandner got on base in the sixth with a walk but would be the final Gopher to reach base.Â
Amber Fiser is now 11-6 on the season. She has a 1.27 ERA with 125 strikeouts. Before tonight's two runs, Fiser had gone 25 innings without allowing a score.Â
Minnesota will open up Big Ten play this upcoming weekend when they travel to College Park, M.D. to take on the University of Maryland. There will be no stream available but live stats can be found here.
