MINNEAPOLIS – Two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year Eric Schierhorn has signed an amateur tryout contract with the ECHL's Adirondack Thunder to begin his professional career.
A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Schierhorn built a 59-45-4 record over his four years with Pride on Ice while ranking among the program's top-10 in every career goaltending category – third in shutouts (12), fourth in games played (112), fourth in minutes played (6,462), sixth in wins (59), seventh in save percentage (.905) and ninth in goals against average (2.65).
Schierhorn backstopped the Maroon & Gold to two-straight Big Ten regular-season championships in 2016 and 2017, helping the University of Minnesota set an NCAA record with its sixth-straight regular-season conference crown in 2017. The netminder was voted the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and a First Team All-Big Ten selection in both his freshman and sophomore season, adding Big Ten All-Freshman Team accolades in his rookie season. Additionally, the netminder made 94-consecutive starts in goal for Minnesota to start his career – the longest starting streak in program history and the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history.
The goaltender is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was honored as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar last year as a junior – an accolade he is eligible for again as a senior.
Schierhorn will be reunited with Gopher Hockey teammate and former assistant captain Mike Szmatula with the Thunder.
