Gophers Open Big Ten Play With Sweep

3/24/2019 2:54:00 PM | Softball

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The No. 20/19 University of Minnesota Gophers topped Maryland 5-3 this afternoon to sweep the series. The Gophers are now 22-9 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

"We put pressure on them right away. We had a lot of baserunners throughout the game," head coach Jamie Trachsel said. We probably stranded a few more than we wanted but we had a big blowup inning scoring four (in the fifth). Coming back and scoring one immediately after that was probably the difference in the game just to extend that lead."

Today's victory concluded seven straight weeks and 31 games on the road for the Maroon and Gold. Next weekend they will host Purdue at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. All three games will be available on BTN Plus with Friday's game slated for 3 p.m. C.T.

"We will get back home, regroup and attack what is in front of us," Trachsel said. "We are excited to be home in front of our own fans and compete at Minnesota. It's huge. You want home field advantage to mean something. We want our fans to be loud, we want them to be rowdy. We want the opponents to feel the weight of support that Minnesota gives their teams."

Amber Fiser pitched a complete game and is now 13-6 on the season. She struck out seven batters while allowing just five hits and three runs. She and the field retired the first 14 batters in order to start the game.

It was a slow start for the Gophers offense, taking until the fifth inning to get themselves on the board, but they did so in a big way.

Three straight singles from Maddie Houlihan, Hope Brandner and Natalie DenHartog started off the frame and loaded up the bases.

The first run of the game came as Allie Arneson reached on an error to score Houlihan. A single to center from Katelyn Kemmetmueller made it 2-0. Anne Miller followed with yet another single to center scoring two runs with the help of a throwing error.

Minnesota tacked on one more run in the sixth when Brandner hit a double to score Houlihan.

The Gophers recorded 13 hits and only had one strikeout in 33 at-bats in today's victory.

Maryland put up a fight in the sixth inning with a three-run frame that included a triple and a double. The Terps put up a hit in the seventh but Fiser fired in her seventh strikeout of the day to close out the game.

Brandner went 2-4 with one double and an RBI. Houlihan and Taylor Chell both went 3-4 and Miller went 1-3 with two RBIs and one walk.

MaKenna Partain and Houlihan each had big weekends. They both hit .667 and combined for 14 hits and 14 runs.
