Minnesota has swept the Big Ten and College Gymnastics Association Freshman of the Week awards for the second consecutive week, this time given to David Pochinka, the outlets announced Tuesday.
The awards come on the heels of Pochinka's best meet yet on March 23. The last outing of the regular season for the Gophers, Pochinka competed on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar, and finished with career highs and podium finishes on each. His performance helped the Gophers to the meet victory, their highest score of the year at 410.950 and a share of the first-ever Big Ten Regular Season Championship.
"David really performed at a high level this past weekend and it was a real factor in our performance as a team," head coach Mike Burns said. "Great to see him competing with such confidence."
Pochinka earned his first-ever event title on the parallel bars, where he scored a career-high mark of 14.500, the third-highest score for the Gophers this season. He is also currently ranked No. 9 nationally on the event.
The rookie, a Plano, Tex. native, shared silver on high bar with sophomore Shane Wiskus as he set a career high score of 13.700. He also set a new career best on pommel horse, where he scored a 13.750 for a share of third place. His score also helped Minnesota set a new high on the event with a score of 68.000.
It is the second Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolade for Pochinka, as he was last awarded on Feb. 12 after also placing in the top three of each of his events of the day. It's his first time being honored by the CGA. David currently holds the best scores among all of Minnesota's nine freshmen on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar.
Pochinka and the Gophers have a week off before heading to the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, on April 5-6.
