MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota men's cross country coach Steve Plasencia has been named the senior men's coach for Team USATF ahead of the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships on Sunday, March 30 in Aarhus, Denmark.
Representing the United States is nothing new for the Gophers coach, who served as the Team USATF junior men's coach at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda. As a runner, Plasencia represented the United States in the 10,000 meters at both the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games as well as four World Championships.
"It's an honor any time you have the opportunity to represent your country," Plasencia said. "I remember every time I had the chance to put on a USA uniform – those are the races that stand out to me from a lot of other international competitions. This is an experience that the runners and staff will remember for years to come."
Plasencia will be joined at this year's event by true freshman Khalid Hussein, who will compete for the Team USATF junior men's team. A native of Plymouth, Minn., Khalid punched his ticket to Denmark after finishing fifth at the 2019 USATF Cross Country National Championships in February in Tallahassee, Fla.
