In just the second year of his Gophers career, sophomore Shane Wiskus has earned back-to-back Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honors, the conference announced Monday.
The Spring Park, Minn. native earned the award as only a rookie last season and after another standout year and three Gymnast of the Week plaudits, Shane became the first Gopher gymnast since John Roethlisberger from 1990-93. Wiskus shares the award with Nebraska's Anton Stephenson.
"Shane Wiskus continues to add to his already impressive resume being named Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Year this season. What an amazing accomplishment and I thank the Big Ten conference for bestowing this award on Shane," head coach Mike Burns said. "His contributions to the success of our team here at Minnesota are already pushing legendary status, and he's only a sophomore."
Wiskus competed in each of Minnesota's regular season meets this season and competed all-around six times. He garnered 16 total event titles, four in the all-around, and 30 podium finishes. Wiskus owns each the Gophers' top season scores on floor (14.550), rings (14.350), parallel bars (14.900) and high bar (14.400).
Shane has been steadily nationally-ranked in several areas throughout the season. He set a new career high all-around score on March 8, 84.350, which is the third-highest score nationally and the second-best in the Big Ten. This launched him into the No. 1 all-around ranking, where he remained from March 11 to March 31 with a qualifying average (NQA) of 83.350.
Wiskus has shown the greatest dominance on both bar sets this season. For three consecutive weeks in March, he set new career-high scores on high bar, and finished with a top mark of 14.400, good to be ranked in the top five since March 11, as high as No. 3 with an NQA of 14.267, best in the Big Ten. He has also been ranked in the top five on parallel bars for most of the season, his highest ranking coming in at No. 3 and also best in conference.
He has been among the top 20 on floor all season and on vault in the last two weeks.
Last time out, Wiskus earned the all-around (83.400) and floor titles (14.200) to help lead the Gophers to a new team season high of 410.950 and a share of the first-ever Big Ten Regular Season Championship. He also earned second place finishes on parallel bars (14.350) and high bar (13.700).
Shane and the Gophers will head to the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend. Team competition will take place on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m., and individual event finals will be held Saturday at 7 p.m.
