Seven Gophers Set for World Championship

The 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship is April 4-14 in Espoo, Finland.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Redshirt senior Kelly Pannek and six University of Minnesota alumnae are headed to the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship, which begins this Thursday in Espoo, Finland.
Pannek joins Gopher alumnae Lee Stecklein, Megan Bozek, Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, and Amanda Kessel on the U.S. Women's National Team roster while fellow Minnesota alumna Noora Raty will represent tournament host Finland.
Gophers associate head coach Joel Johnson will also support the Red, White, and Blue as an assistant coach for the U.S. at the tournament.
The 10-team tournament begins with preliminary round group play Thursday, April 4 through Tuesday, April 9. Group A features Canada, Finland, Russia, Switzerland, and the U.S. while Group B is Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, and Sweden.
Following the preliminary round play are the quarterfinal round and placement round games on Thursday, April 11. The semifinals are Saturday, April 13 with the medal games to follow on Sunday, April 14.
All games at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship will be broadcast live in the U.S. on the NHL Network.
The U.S. has won the last four IIHF Women's World Championships and captured the top prize a total of eight times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017), including seven of the last eight tournaments.
