DURHAM, N.C. – A day after leading Minnesota to victory with a pinch-hit RBI single and a walk-off two-run home run, outfielder/pitcher Max Meyer earned another distinction as USA Baseball named him to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List on Wednesday.
Meyer is one of two players from the Big Ten Conference to receive recognition among this year's 40 Midseason honorees, 21 of whom played their way onto the list this season while Meyer earned a spot on the Preseason list announced back on February 5. The Southeast Conference leads the 13 leagues represented on the list with 10 athletes. Minnesota's previous honorees in the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List were pitchers Tom Windle (2013) and T.J. Oakes (2012).
The Woodbury native moved from the closing role to Minnesota's starting rotation earlier this season, currently leading the starting staff with a miniscule 1.64 ERA in 10 appearances, including five starts. He earned two saves to start the season and has posted a 3-1 record since, striking out 50 batters in 44.0 innings compared to just nine strikeouts. Meyer also leads the Gophers in batting this season, currently at .311 in 26 games as a designated hitter and outfielder. He slugged his first collegiate home run while adding four doubles, 12 RBIs, and 13 runs scored this season. The two-way athlete has also swiped a pair of bases.
The Watch List cuts down to semifinalists on May 15 with finalists announced on May 29. The winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be announced on June 14.
Single-game tickets remain available for all Siebert Field home games. Tickets for the Saturday, April 20 home game against Oklahoma at Target Field will be available for purchase at the box office on day of game. Gopher season ticket holders and students will receive free admission for the Big Ten-Big 12 showdown.
