If you've ever experienced a live tennis match at Baseline, odds are you've been a part of the Camila Vargas experience. As one of the most energetic and fierce competitors to join the Gophers, Vargas has made a mark on the University of Minnesota women's tennis family that will forever leave a hole. Gopher Sports sat down with the soon to be graduate to unearth some of her best memories with the Maroon and Gold as well as what being a Golden Gopher has meant to her.

GS: When you look back on your time at Minnesota, what match, practice or event stands out to you the most?
CV: I have so many memories so it's hard for me to pick one of them. When I look back I think about all the times that we had to work together as a team in order to accomplish our goals. I think about all the amazing matches that we won and felt really proud of and about all the matches that made us be stronger. I think about helping each other to be better and trying to figure out ways to become a better team. I also think about all the trips and how amazing each of them were. Many laughs, fun moments, emotions and enjoyment. I think about all the people helped me through my four years. I think about how much I have matured and how much time I spent on a tennis court trying to figure out the best way to be better and bring the best to my team.

GS: If you could leave any piece of advice or words of wisdom for the younger players what would it be?
CV:
  • Be ready to enjoy some of the best years of your life
  • Have fun because time flies.
  • Enjoy every single moment
  • Learn as much as you can from every single experience.
  • Fight like crazy
  • Always be there for your teammates

GS: What has Minnesota given you?
CV: This school has given me absolutely everything. I have had some of the best years of my life in this school and I cannot be more grateful. I could have not asked for a better education and this program has given me more than what I could have ever dreamed of. I had great coaches through my entire career as a student-athlete, I had great trainers making sure that I was always doing okay and I had an entire staff team always taking care of any needs. This school has turned into my second home where I got to know amazing people and mentors that really helped me become the best version of myself. Minnesota has given me unreal experiences. Playing on a team and for a school has been more than a blessing for me. Minnesota has given me a second family. I have so many friends here that I love and that I will forever be friends with.

GS: What is your next step after school?
CV: I am a Supply Chain major and I will be doing something related to my major after graduation. I want to stay in the Twin Cities for now because I love this state, but Chicago is also another option for me.

GS: Anything else you would like to add about your time at Minnesota?
CV: I want to thank this school for letting me achieve my dream and for believing in me. I never thought moving to another country to accomplish a dream could be this amazing. I will forever thank the University of Minnesota for letting me play for them and for supporting me at all times. My time here was nothing but a dream. No matter how much I say or do, I will never be able to thank this school enough. This school took care of me from day one and I know I can always come back to some of my mentors here in case I ever need anything. I will be around after I graduate and I will always be there in case other student-athletes, especially international student-athletes need any advice from an alumni like myself. Thank you UMN, you are one of the best things that has happened to me.
