Minnesota Blanks Green Bay to Solidify Senior Weekend Sweep

4/21/2019 7:29:00 PM | Tennis

In their final regular season match of the year, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team swept the Green Bay Phoenix 7-0 to give them a final season record of 14-10, 6-5 B1G. With their win over the Phoenix, the Gophers finish with a final home record of 11-1 which ties the fewest amount of losses on home court in a season—a feat that hasn't been matched since the 2002-03 team. Additionally, the Gophers celebrated their four seniors Annemarie Emme, Bita Mancera, Caitlyn Merzbacher, and Camila Vargas in a post-match ceremony.

"It is obviously a very emotional weekend for us having Senior Day and honoring the storied careers of our four seniors," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "To come in and sweep the weekend against three quality teams is a credit to the girls. They knew what was at stake and they stayed disciplined and they fought their hearts out—I couldn't be more proud of them."

Doubles
The Gophers played through all three matches where they boasted three winning scores against the Phoenix. Emme got back into the lineup for the first time since the fall season as she teamed up with fellow senior Mancera to knock off their Green Bay opponents 6-1 from the No. 2 slot. Bella Lambert also found her way back in the lineup as she paired up with senior, Vargas to down their competition 6-2 from the No. 3 position.

Singles
Minnesota dominated singles action with four of the six first sets being claimed by 6-0 shutout performances. The two seniors in the Gophers singles lineup, Mancera and Merzbacher, both won their matches by way of 6-0, 6-0 shutouts. Throughout the extent of singles, Minnesota only dropped nine game points in their route to a 7-0 sweep of Green Bay.

Up Next
The Golden Gophers learned their fate early in the afternoon in regards to post-season action. Minnesota will head to Lincoln, Neb. from April 25-28, 2019 to compete at the Big Ten Tournament where they earned an automatic bid into the second round of action with their win over Iowa earlier today. The #6 Gophers will face off with #3 Illinois on April 26 at 2pm CT. No. 31 Illinois gave Minnesota their only home loss of the season in a 6-1 showing on April 14.

"We feel that we've been playing better each and every match as we've gone deeper into the season," Thompson added. "Since we had a tight one with Illinois and them being a tough team we are going to have to go in there and play some of our best tennis in order to get the win."
