Gophers Host Minnesota Women's Twilight Meet

The Minnesota track & field program won 10 titles as the women's team hosted its first-ever meet at the new Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Wednesday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Outdoor track & field has officially returned to the University of Minnesota campus as the Golden Gophers won 10 titles at the Minnesota Women's Twilight Meet, the first-ever meet at the new Minnesota Track and Field Stadium, on Wednesday evening.

"It was pretty surreal, to tell you the truth, to come out here today, knowing that today's the day," director of track & field Matt Bingle said. "It was a long, long time coming. We have a lot to be thankful for. It's a great day for a lot of people."

The Gophers won six event titles in the field events along with claiming four titles on their home track.

Minnesota swept the throwing events with wins by Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw) and Kiley Sabin (discus) competing in uniform and Candesha Scott (javelin) and Nayoka Clunis (shot put) competing unattached.

Ogunrinde won hammer throw with a mark of 64.04 meters (210-01 feet) as the Gophers took the top five places in the event. Meanwhile, Sabin won the discus with her second-best throw of the season at 51.39 meters (168-07 feet).

"It's so incredible, honestly, just to be here and to have a place to call our own and have our first home meet," Ogunrinde said. "We've always been away, whether it's here locally or in a different state, so it's just really nice to be here and defend our own turf... The wait was forever and the wait was worth it. It's just so cool."

Clunis won shot put while competing unattached with a career-best mark of 17.18 meters (56-04.50 feet); Tess Keyzers improved on her career best in shot put, already ranked second among all-time Gophers, with a throw of 16.66 meters (54-08.00) as runner-up representing the Maroon & Gold.

Scott made her outdoor debut with a win in the javelin (48.85 meters, 160-03 feet) while competing unattached, and Ryan Crotty recorded a career-best mark of 47.25 meters (155-00 feet) as runner-up.

Ashley Ramacher (high jump) and Karlie Place (pole vault) both recorded season-best marks to win their respective events as well. Ramacher cleared a season-best height of 1.73 meters (5-08.00 feet) to win high jump while Hannah Arason recorded an outdoor career-best mark of 1.69 meters (5-06.50 feet) as runner-up. Meanwhile, Place won pole vault by clearing 4.05 meters (13-03.50 feet).

On the track, the Gophers took the top four places in the 1,500-meter run behind Ally Smith's win in a career-best time of 4:42.54, and Lauren Hansen swept the 200m and 400m titles while competing unattached. Minnesota's 4x400-meter relay team of Kayla Baker, Jenna Conzemius, Molly Roach, and Kelsey Sather wrapped up the meet with a win in 4:04.08 as well.

The Gopher men will have their chance to compete at the new outdoor stadium when they host the Minnesota Men's Twilight Meet next Wednesday, May 1.

Minnesota continues a busy week of competition at the Drake Relays Thursday through Saturday along with a group competing locally at Macalester's Janis Rider Invitational on Saturday.
