Gophers Win Four Titles at Drake Relays

Minnesota wrapped up a busy week of competition on the final day of the Drake Relays on Saturday.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Golden Gopher track & field program wrapped up the Drake Relays with three event titles on Saturday to close out the meet with four total victories as Amira Young swept the women's 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, Kelli Schmidt won the women's 800-meter run, and Kieran McKeag won the men's hammer throw.
Men's Highlights
The University of Minnesota picked up nine top-10 finishes at the 2019 Drake Relays on Saturday behind a winning hammer throw toss from Kieran McKeag.
The Maroon & Gold finished first and second in the event with McKeag leading the way at 67.22 meters (220-06 ft.) – the mark stands as the third-best hammer throw performance in University of Minnesota. An Honorable Mention All-American in the discipline last season, Saturday's victory marked McKeag's first hammer throw win of the season. Jon Nerdal was right behind McKeag in second behind his own personal record of 67.01 meters (219-10 ft.) – a mark that puts Nerdal fifth all-time for the Gophers.
Minnesota also picked up runner-up finishes on the men's side from Mason Roomes in the long jump at 7.17 meters (23-06.25 ft.) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Jonathan Webb, Elliott Davis, Josh Tracy and Ben Psicihulis at 3:10.38.
Jonathan Tharaldsen added his second top-five performance of the weekend with a third-place performance in the men's discus at 55.08 meters (180-08 ft.) while Kaleb Siekmeier came in fourth at 54.92 meters (180-02 ft.). Zach Nelson also posted a third-place finish in the men's 100 meter final at 10.51.
Minnesota also posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the men's pole vault as Mike Herauf finished sixth and John Uchytil tied for seventh. Both Gophers cleared 4.80 meters (15-09 ft.)
Women's Highlights
On the track, the Gopher women took home two event titles on Saturday as Young won the 100-meter dash in 11.55 seconds after also winning the 200-meter dash in 23.66 seconds on Friday. Schmidt won the women's 800-meter run in 2:11.13, leading three Gophers among the top nine in the event as Val Larson placed sixth and Paige Peschel was ninth.
Also on the track, Minnesota's distance medley relay team of Bethany Hasz, Sophia Anderson, Sophie Schmitz, and Megan Hasz finished sixth in 11:26.49, good for seventh among all-time Gophers.
In Saturday's field events, Lorean Murray led the Gopher women with a third-place finish in triple jump while Temi Ogunrinde finished fourth in hammer throw and Ashley Ramacher placed eighth in high jump.

The Gopher men have their official debut at the new Minnesota Track and Field Stadium when they host the Minnesota's Men's Twilight Meet on Wednesday, May 1. In a tune-up for the Big Ten Championship (May 10-12), the Gopher women are set to compete at the Tommie Twilight on Wednesday, May 1 and the Hamline Meet of the Un-Saintly on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 as well.
