Gophers Advance to Super Regional

The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team has earned a spot in tomorrow's Super Regional competition after taking 2nd with a team score of 196.300 in the afternoon session of the Baton Rouge Regional. 1st-place-finishing Utah will also move on to tomorrow's quad meet, which will determine the two teams who will advance to the NCAA Championships on April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Gophers put together strong vault and bars rotations in today's session featuring Arkansas, BYU and Utah in addition to Minnesota. The Maroon and Gold earned a team vault score of 49.225 and a team bars score of 49.250, both of which rank in the top-three highest event scores of the session.

"I thought they did a really good job," said head coach Jenny Hansen on the team's performance. "It was a very intense meet--tight all the way through--, and we knew it would be going in. Every team going in was a top-20 team. So we knew we had a tough regional, and we were going to have to do pretty great to move on. I'm very pleased with how we did. I'm very excited we get to do it again tomorrow."

Individual gopher gymnasts earned some of the top scores of the session, with Lexy Ramler and Ivy Lu each notching a 9.900 on bars and Ona Loper wowing the crowd with her 9.950 on vault. Loper stuck the landing on a Yurchenko one and a half to earn a career-high score on the apparatus. Arkansas's Michaela Burton and Hailey Garner posted the top beam score (9.900) of the session, and the best floor score (9.925) went to Utah's MyKayla Skinner.

"[Ona] was great," added Hansen. "She's been waiting to stick that vault all year long so it was pretty exciting when it happened today. She's been nailing it in practice, so for her to do it in competition was pretty awesome."

Tomorrow's competition will see Minnesota rotate bars-beam-floor-vault, so the Gophers will begin and end with their best events from today's meet. The top-two teams from the evening session of the Baton Rouge Regional (LSU, Auburn, ASU and George Washington) will join Utah and Minnesota tomorrow for the chance to secure a spot at the national championships.

"We just have to go after everything," said Hansen. "There's no holding back, and there's nothing to lose tomorrow. They have to go in with complete confidence in themselves and their teammates and just let it all out."

The all-around competition this morning featured both Ramler and Loper. Ramler's 39.400 was the second-highest all-around mark of the session. Loper's 39.300 was the fourth-best all-around score of the afternoon.

Vault

Team Vault combined for an impressive 49.225 during today's competition. Ona Loper stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 to earn a career-high 9.950, which was the highest-scoring vault of the afternoon session. Ramler also stuck her landing and received a 9.875 for her vault while Paige Williams put up a 9.825. Kristen Quaglia posted a strong 9.800 and Tiarre Sales finished off the rotation for Minnesota with a 9.775.
