Ogunrinde Makes Big Ten Track & Field History

Temi Ogunrinde became the first athlete in history to win three-straight Big Ten titles in the women's hammer throw on Friday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Temi Ogunrinde won her unprecedented third-straight Big Ten women's hammer throw title on Friday to lead the University of Minnesota track & field program on the opening day of the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 

Through three events, the Gopher women stand in fourth place with 18 points at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track while the Minnesota men are in sixth with 11 points after four events.  

Women's Day One Highlights
Ogunrinde led the Gophers on day one of the B1G Championship by winning her third-straight Big Ten title in the hammer throw with a meet and facility record mark of 67.42 meters (221-02 ft.). Her throw marked a season best as she became the first woman ever to win three B1G hammer throw titles.

Megan Hasz also secured eight points for the Gopher women in the team standings with a runner-up showing in the 10,000-meter run, finishing just shy of her career best in 33:09.64. 
 
Day one of the heptathlon saw Allison Gerads lead the Maroon & Gold in fourth place with 3,199 points; Monique Felix is in sixth place with 3,131 points through four events.
 
Gerads won the heptathlon shot put with a career-best mark of 12.96 meters (42-06.25 ft.) along with recording career bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.84 seconds) and high jump (1.63 meters, 5-04.25 ft.). Meanwhile, Felix posted a career-best mark in shot put at 11.65 meters (38-02.75 ft.) to place third in the event for her best heptathlon finish of the day.
 
Erin Huls (400-meter hurdles), Amira Young (200-meter dash), and Bethany Hasz (1,500-meter run) advanced out of Friday's preliminary heats in their respective events for the Gopher women as well. Young improved on her third-ranked 200m dash time in Gophers' history with a career-best time of 23.59 seconds while Huls clocked a 400m hurdles time of 59.61 seconds to move on. B. Hasz used a season-best time to move on in the 1,500m, finishing in 4:23.36.

Men's Day One Highlights
The Maroon & Gold opened the day with 11 points in the men's hammer throw as Kieran McKeag and Jon Nerdal recorded podium finishes for the Gophers. McKeag rounded out the competition with a new personal record of 68.01 meters (223-01 ft.) to claim third and post the No. 3 performance in Minnesota history. Nerdal was right behind his teammate in fourth at 65.97 meters (216-05 ft.). 

Additionally, Mike Herauf and John Uchytil tied for ninth in the men's pole vault on Friday afternoon with both Gophers clearing 4.91 meters (16-01.25 ft.). Uchytil's mark stands as a new personal record. 

Collin Sieffert led the Gophers in the 400-meter hurdle prelims, clocking the fifth-fastest performance in school history at 52.22 to finish 10th. Hunter Lucas added a personal record of 3:49.15 in the men's 1,500 meter prelims.
