MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Angus Flanagan posted the best finish by a Gopher at the NCAA Regionals in five years as play wrapped up Wednesday at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
Flanagan shot an even-par 71 Wednesday to end his tournament run in a five-way tie for 20th with a 4-over-par 217. It's the best finish by a Gopher at an NCAA Regional since Jose Mendez tied for ninth at the Raleigh Regional in 2014.
However, it wasn't enough to send Flanagan on to the NCAA Championships. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championship at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., May 24-29.
The low individual that advanced was Arkansas' Julian Perico, who was 3-under for the tournament at 210, seven shots better than Flanagan. In addition to Perico, host-Texas (25-under), TCU (5-under), Clemson (1-under), Pepperdine (6-over) and USC (8-over) also advanced.
For Flanagan, who was competing in his first ever NCAA postseason event, it was fourth straight top-20 finish and his fifth overall of the season. In five spring tournaments, he never finished worse than 21st.
The Woking, England, native started his round strong with birdies on holes four and six to get to 2-under. However, a double bogey on No. 9 left him at even-par for the front nine.
After three straight pars to open the back nine, Flanagan got back into the red with another birdie on No. 13, but he gave the stroke back with a bogey on No. 15. He posted his fourth birdie of the day on the 17th hole, but closed out the tournament with a bogey on 18 to leave him with an even-par 71.
Flanagan finishes the season by accumulating 2,150 strokes over 30 rounds, good for a scoring average of 71.67 that ranks third all-time at Minnesota behind only James McLean in 1998-99 (70.89) and 1997-98 (71.39).
Flanagan also led the Gophers this season in rounds under par (11), tournaments leading the team (7), best finish to par (-7), low score for 54 holes (206), most top-10 finishes (3) and most top-20 finishes (5).
Just a sophomore, Flanagan is one of eight Gophers expected back for the 2019-20 season.
