The No. 13/8 University of Minnesota fell 1-0 to No. 19/14 Northwestern in a battle between two of the top three teams in the Big Ten.
The Gophers drop to 37-11 overall on the season and 18-2 in the Big Ten while Northwestern stays undefeated in conference play. They will play the Wildcats again tomorrow at 3 p.m. on ESPN and finish the series on Sunday at 3 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
Tonight's game was moving quickly in an absolute pitcher's duel before Mother Nature got in the way. The Gophers saw their only hit in the fourth inning by way of Hope Brandner and Northwestern finished with just two hits, the first not coming until the fifth inning.
The Gophers had a number of big defensive plays. Emma Burns caught two runners stealing on the day in key first inning and fifth inning moments. Carlie Brandt had the play of the day with a diving grab in the fifth inning.
With rain starting to pour down in the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats drew a one-out walk and followed it up with a double right down the left field line to put runners into scoring position. A wild pitch plated the only run of the game. Amber Fiser followed it up with a strikeout and the game went into a rain delay an hour and 33 minute delay with two outs on the board.
Fiser wasted no time inducing a groundout out of the delay but the Gophers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Fiser pitched a complete game and drops to 23-7 on the season despite the two-hit effort. She struck out 10 batters and recorded seven straight early in the game. She has a 1.31 ERA on the season with 266 strikeouts.
