The Gophers are welcoming four newcomers to the 2019-20 team with the additions of Delanie Cox, Kianna Jones, Olivia Peterson and Sydney Strelow. We have a breakdown of what they have been up to since their signing day release.Â
Cox is an NFCA All-American and Softball America Top-300 incoming freshmen out of Aurora, Colo. She was named the Cherokee Trails High School Female Athlete of the Year and recently played in the Top Gun Invitational. She will compete in the Triple Crown Fastpitch in Atlanta, Ga. from July 15-18 and just qualified for PGF Nationals.Â
Cox turned in a legendary performance that was documented by The Sentinel Colorado. Two weeks after a surgery on a finger, Cox showed a video to her coaches to prove that she could still hit one handed. She not only played in the state semifinal game with a hard cast on her entire right hand, but also drove in the game winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jones is a right-handed pitcher from Surrey, B.C. Canada. She has been a key member of the Canadian Junior Women's National team the past few years and earned a spot on the 2019 team. She has a busy summer ahead competing in the Canadian Open, July 11-17, and will then compete in the U-19 Women's Softball World Cup from August 10-17 down in Irvine, Calif.Â
Peterson is a catcher/utility out of Dyer, Ind. She recently finished her high school career ranked top-5 in school history in career home runs, doubles and triples. She was named 2019 First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State. She also won the Indiana Face of Sportsmanship Award and was an Academic Scholar Athlete Award recipient. She was featured in the Times of Northwest Indiana here.
Strelow is an infielder out of Kenosha, Wis. She piled on the accolades and records while leading Bradford High School to state. She earned All-Conference honors in both basketball and softball and was named a nominee for both the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Softball Player of the Year and the Greater Kenosha Youth Baseball/Softball Organization Outstanding Softball Player of the Year. She was also named the Kenosha County Outstanding Athlete of the Year in February. She holds single season records for hits (46), doubles (15), home runs (9) and RBIs (50). She was a regular in the Kenosha News this past year including this recap when Bradford advanced to state.
