Baseball Updates On 2019-20 Newcomers

As summer ball begins and collegiate/high school seasons wrap up, take a look at what some of our 2019-20 newcomers have been up to since they committed to Minnesota. We're excited to have these individuals join us this fall!Â
1B - Ronnie Sweeny (Iowa Western CC) - Sweeny helped Iowa Western win the NJCAA D1 Region XI Tournament as the team also finished runner-up at the NJCAA Division-I World Series. Sweeny hit .440 (70x159) and led the Reivers in home runs (16) and slugging percentage (.887) to go along with 70 RBI, 19 doubles, two triples and 65 runs scored. Sweeney, hailing from Woodbury, Minn., was named to the Northern District All-Tournament Team, the ICCA Division-I Defensive Player of the Year and won the Junior College World Series "Leading Hitter" Award. In addition, he he was named to the All NJCAA World Series Team as well as receiving All American accolades as a JBB First-Team All-American and NJCAA All America honorable mention. Sweeny is also playing for the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod League this summer.Â

OF/1B/3B - Kyle Bork (St. Francis HS, Ga.) - Bork finished the high school season hitting .383 (36x94) with 7 home runs, 38 RBI, seven doubles, three triples, 35 runs scored, 10 stolen bases and 21 walks for St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Ga. Bork was named first-team all-region, was the Knights' Team MVP and second-team all-state in Georgia. Bork finished his four-year high school career with a .360 career average to go along with 12 home runs, 21 doubles and 95 RBI. Bork is also playing summer ball with the Alpharetta Aviators in the Sunbelt League.Â

RHP /1B - Sam Ireland (Highlands Ranch, Colo.)Â - Ireland was named the Class 5A Player for the second year in a row, receiving the most votes in state history. Additionally, he was named the Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year in Colorado, also for the second-straight year. Ireland was also named First-Team All State Colorado, All Area and First-Team Continental All Conference. He finished his senior season hitting .425 (45x106) with five home runs, 36 RBI, 13 doubles, 22 runs scored with 10 stolen bases. On the mound, he finished 9-0 with a 0.91 ERA, in 54 innings pitch and had 60 strikeouts as his opponents hit just .203 against him. Ireland finished his high school career with a 24-2 career prep record with 160 strikeouts. At the plate he finished with 19 career home runs and 100 RBI's.Â

OF - Steve Jamroziak (Muskego HS, WI)Â - Jamroziak hit .417 (25x60) with five home runs, 15 RBI, three doubles, three triples, three stolen bases, nine walks and 25 runs scored for Muskego High School. He was also named Classic Eight All-Conference and a first-team all-are Wisconsin this past season. Jamroziak will also play with the West Allies Nationals of the Wisconsin State League this summer.Â

RHP - Michael Gurka (Joliet Catholic, IL) - Gurka finished with a 4-0 record and a 2.41 earned run average in 29 innings pitched. He also had 37 strikeouts. He also started in right field where he hit .382 (26x68) with a home run, and 20 RBI. Gurka was named an all-conference selection in the ESCC as well as earning first-team all-area in Illinois. He will also play for the Western Nebraska Pioneers in the Expedition League this summer. Â

RHP - Bennett Theisen (Minnehaha Academy) - Theisen finished with a 7-0 record to go along with a 0.59 ERA in 47 1/3 innings pitched and had 64 strikeouts. Also starting at third, Theisen hit .389 (28x72) with a home run, eight doubles, 19 RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. Theisen led the state of Minnesota with a 0.59 earned run average. He was named a first-team all-metro selection, an Independent Metro Athletic All Conference selection and Pioneer Press Player of the Year finalist. He also earned academic all-state honors and selected to the Play Ball Minnesota All Star Team. Theisen led Minnehaha Academy to back-to-back appearances in AA State Championship. Â

RHP - Trent Schoeberl (White Bear Lake HS) - On the mound, Schoeberl finished with a 2.14 earned run average in 42 2/3 innings pitched and 56 strikeouts. Highlight of the spring season was tossing a complete game no-hitter on May 20, 2019, against Park of Cottage Grove. Named Suburban East All-Conference selection, Schoeberl was named to the Play Ball Minnesota All-Star series and is a finalist for Minnesota Mr. Baseball Award. He's also set to play summer ball with Saugerties Stallions of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.Â

LHP - Will Anderson (St. Michael HS)Â - Anderson held an 8-0 on the mound with a 1.34 earned run average. He also struck out 68 batters in 47 innings pitched. Anderson led the state of Minnesota in wins, finished third in strikeouts and fourth in innings pitched. He finished the season with a 7.2-to-1 (strikeout to walk ratio). This past season, he was named a first-team all-metro and Mississippi 8 All-Conference selection. He was also named to the Play Ball Minnesota All Star Team.Â
