Four years after leading Canada to a gold medal in the Pan-American games, Sara Groenewegen is set to compete again in Lima, Peru later this summer.
Groenewegen is one of 15 players named to the Softball Canada Pan-American roster. Right now, Canada has been competing with a roster of 23 as the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) League.
"I am very proud to have the opportunity to represent Canada in Peru, and it is something only a select number of people get to do," Groenewegen said to Softball Canada. "Getting the chance to play at another Pan-American Games is an (honor), especially after all of the hard work we put in this offseason. Toronto (in 2015) was a life changing experience. It was the closest experience to the Olympics that our team has had since 2008, so to be a part of a team that has another chance to live out that experience is really exciting. We are hopeful that the games will be another step up in our preparation for the Olympic qualifier in August, and we are extremely excited to represent Canada in Peru."
In 2015, Groenewegen pitched an eight inning, seven strikeout game allowing just one earned run as Canada topped the USA in the gold medal game. It was the first gold medal for Canada since 1983.
Softball at the Pan-American games will take place Aug. 4 to 10 but will have no direct impact on the 2020 Olympics. The WBSC Americas Softball Qualifier is scheduled to take place from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1 in Surrey, B.C.
Groenewegen is the only three-time All-American in Minnesota softball history. She was named the Big Ten Player, Pitcher (twice) and Freshman of the year in her career and finished as the Gophers all-time strikeout leader with 1,214 in her career.
