Cincinnati Reds Select Stevenson in Tenth Round of MLB Draft

6/4/2019 5:34:00 PM | Baseball

The Cincinnati Reds selected Minnesota Baseball right-hander pitcher Jake Stevenson in the tenth round of the 2019 MLB Draft with the 294th overall selection.

Stevenson became the second Gopher to be drafted this year, following up a seventh-round selection of Brett Schulze earlier Tuesday.

The senior saw considerable success for the Maroon & Gold after a move to the bullpen in 2019. A native of Waconia, Stevenson pitched in a career-high 20 games and earned his first collegiate save in 2019. He impressed with a season-long 4.1 innings in a start at Michigan on April 6, striking out six, and tossed 2.0 hitless innings with four punch outs against Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament. For his career, the hard-throwing righty tossed 92.0 innings in his career, striking out 75 batters, and finished 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA in 48 appearances, including 13 starts. Stevenson earned the team's Excellence in Athletic Performance award for his work off the diamond and wrapped up his degree in Sport Management from Minnesota this year.

Entering Tuesday, the Maroon & Gold boasted 130 Draft picks dating back to 1966; the program has produced 36 Major Leaguers including MLB Hall of Famers Dave Winfield ('73) and Paul Molitor ('77). Minnesota had four players picked in 2018 including its highest pick since 2010, Rockies third-round choice Terrin Vavra.

The MLB Draft continues Wednesday with several current, former, and future Gophers eligible to be selected.
