Nicole Schammel becomes the second Gopher alumna to sign with the NWHL's Whitecaps for the 2019-20 season.
MINNEAPOLIS --Â Nicole Schammel is the second Gopher alumna to sign with the NWHL for the 2019-20 season as the Red Wing, Minn., native has signed with the defending Isobel Cup champion Minnesota Whitecaps for the upcoming season.
Schammel was drafted by the Buffalo Beauts as the 23rd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2018 NWHL Draft but elected to remain in her home state to play for the Whitecaps. She joins fellow Minnesota alumna Amanda Leveille on the Whitecaps squad for next season.Â
"Being a part of the Whitecaps organization is a huge honor and I could not be more excited to join the team and the NWHL," Schammel said in a statement from the NWHL. "The visibility for women's hockey has increased over the last few years. The opportunities available for women's hockey players have improved, and I hope to see these continue to grow."
Schammel capped off her Gophers career with an outstanding senior season during which she was named a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and earned a place on the All-WCHA Second Team tied as the WCHA's Scoring Champion with 27 points (10g-17a) in 24 conference games. After beginning her career at Minnesota State during the 2014-15 season, Schammel played for the Maroon & Gold from 2016-17 to 2018-19 after sitting out the 2015-16 season due to transfer rules. She ended her collegiate career with 113 career points (50g-62a) in 152 career games.
A 2018-19 CoSIDA Academic All-District, WCHA Scholar-Athlete, and WCHA All-Academic Team honoree, Schammel completed her undergraduate degree in Business and Marketing Education and earned her M. Ed. in Sport Management from the University of Minnesota this spring.
