Gophers Name 2019 Captains

Maria Eastman, Lindsey Greenlund, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Kelsey Sather, Tate Sweeney, and Evan Ferlic will lead the Maroon & Gold this fall.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher cross country program has announced its 2019 team captains. On the women's side, Maria Eastman, Lindsey Greenlund, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Kelsey Sather, and Tate Sweeney will lead the Maroon & Gold while Evan Ferlic will lead the men's squad this fall.

Maria Eastman, Redshirt Junior (Victoria, Minn.)
Eastman enters her first season as a captain for the Gophers this fall. The 2018 cross country season saw her run career-best six-kilometer time of 22:21.4. She had a breakout season on the track last spring, making her Big Ten debut with a 17th-place finish in the 10,000-meter run and clocking PRs in three events. Eastman joined the Gophers in 2017-18 after spending her freshman season at the University of Iowa. A double-major in Spanish and Journalism, Eastman is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Lindsey Greenlund, Redshirt Junior (Rochester, Minn.)
Greenlund enters her first season serving as a team captain this fall. She ran a career-best six-kilometer time of 21:40.0 last fall and went on to make her Big Ten Conference debut on the track with an eighth-place finish in the distance medley relays indoors and a ninth-place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase outdoors. A Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree in both 2018-19 and 2017-18, Greenlund is a Chemistry major who intends to go to medical school.

Abby Kohut-Jackson, Redshirt Junior (Huxley, Iowa)
Kohut-Jackson enters her first season serving as a captain for the Gophers. She begins her redshirt junior season ranked 34th on Minnesota's all-time top-50 performers list with a career-best six-kilometer time of 21:13.57. She is a two-time Big Ten Conference and NCAA Championship participant in cross country, most recently finishing as the fourth Gopher at both meets in 2018. On the track, Kohut-Jackson made her NCAA West Prelim debut last spring with a 25th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. A double-major in Neuroscience and Spanish, Kohut-Jackson is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree in both 2018-19 and 2017-18.

Kelsey Sather, Redshirt Senior (Plymouth, Minn.)
Sather returns as a captain for the Maroon & Gold after also serving as a captain during the 2018 cross country season. A leader of Minnesota's mid-distance squad, Sather ran four races last fall and went on to record career-best times in the 600-meter run and 800-meter run on the track last spring. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Sather is majoring in Chemical Engineering.

Tate Sweeney, Redshirt Sophomore (Edina, Minn.)
Sweeney enters her first season as a captain for the Gophers this fall. After red-shirting the 2017-18 season, Sweeney made her debut for the Maroon & Gold last season. She ended the season ranked 49th on Minnesota's all-time top-50 performers list with a career-best six-kilometer time of 21:33.3; she was named an alternate for the NCAA Cross Country Championship as well. On the track, Sweeney posted career-best times in the mile, 3,000-meter run, and 3,000-meter steeplechase last spring. An Elementary Education major, Sweeney earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last season.

Evan Ferlic, Redshirt Senior (Roseville, Minn.)
Ferlic returns as team captain of the Minnesota men's squad in 2019 after recording his best season with the Maroon & Gold last year. An NCAA All-Region honoree, Ferlic scored for the Gophers in each of his five races during the 2018 campaign including a pair of top-10 finishes. The Mounds Park Academy product also set a new eight-kilometer personal record at the Big Ten Championships with his time of 24:06.8. A three-year letter winner in cross country, Ferlic is an Academic All-Big Ten selection while working towards a degree in economics.
