Gophers Ranked No. 3 in AVCA Preseason Poll

The University of Minnesota volleyball program enters the 2019 season as the third-ranked team in the nation, announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Gophers will face tough competition in both the nonconference and conference season this year as 11 of the 2019 Gopher opponents are ranked or receiving votes. Minnesota will face Florida State (receiving votes) the opening weekend, No. 4 Texas on Sept. 4, host No. 10 Florida on Sept. 7, and face No. 11 Oregon and No. 1 Stanford, Sept. 13-14. The Big Ten Conference alone has seven ranked in the top 25: Nebraska (2), Minnesota (3), Wisconsin (5), Illinois (6), Penn State (8), Michigan (15) and Purdue (17).
The last time the Gophers entered the season as the third-best team dates back to 2016 and it marks the fourth-straight year the Gophers enter the season as a top-five team.
Minnesota returns six starters from last year's Big Ten Championship team, including seniors Alexis Hart and Taylor Morgan, juniors Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy and sophomores CC McGraw and Adanna Rollins. The Gophers also add six newcomers to the 2019 roster. Minnesota went 27-4 in 2018 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinal.
Minnesota opens the 2019 season in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Aug. 30-31. The Gophers open the home season, Sept. 7, when Florida comes to town at 7 p.m.
