The Gopher women's cross country team captains check in from preseason training up north in Ely, Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher women's cross country team kicked off the 2019 season with the program's annual preseason training trip up north in Ely, Minn. The squad left Minneapolis on Friday for six days of training, team-bonding, card games, delicious food, and gorgeous scenery.
Minnesota's team captains Abby Kohut-Jackson, Lindsey Greenlund, Maria Eastman, Tate Sweeney, and Kelsey Sather provided daily updates from Camp Voyager during the trip.
Day One: Friday, Aug. 23
Hello Gopher family! Today was our first day up at camp in Ely, Minnesota. We started with the long bus ride up where we chatted, relaxed, and jammed to some songs together. When we arrived, we were greeted with delicious lunch in the mess hall! The team then headed to the park in town for our first workout as a group in the 2019 season. The girls killed it! After a great lasagna dinner, we settled in for some get-to-know-you rounds, followed by some INTENSE card gaming, already scheming up for the card tournament to follow. Happy to be here in the beautiful north woods! -- Abby Kohut-Jackson
Day Two: Saturday, Aug. 24
Hello Gopher friends and fans! We have survived another successful day up at camp. We started the day with an easy recovery run in perfect weather (60 and sunny). A tasty lunch was served, and then we had some free time to do activities of our choice. Some people went on a waterfall canoeing adventure, some chose to tan and relax on the dock and others preferred to work toward the completion of a 1500 piece puzzle (started yesterday, almost done). Into the evening, we gained some insight and motivation watching a documentary about one of the most incredible people to ever come through the program -- Gabe Grunewald. Gearing up for a big workout tomorrow morning! -- Lindsey Greenlund
Day Three: Sunday, Aug. 25
Hey Gophers fans! It's Maria checking in on day 3 in Ely. Homemade scones and HOT CEREAL were the perfect breakfast fuel we needed to go into today's progressive workout around Miners Lake. Hop surprised us all with some added hill repeats after the progressive, but she also surprised us with Dairy Queen to recover properly! The afternoon was spent working on individual goal-setting, crafts, hammocking by the lake, and catching some z's. We finished the day off with dinner around the camp fire and more team bonding activities. Thanks for following along on our camp journey and go Gophers! -- Maria Eastman
Day Four: Monday, Aug. 26
Welcome back Ski-U-Squad! Today was the infamous morning island swim. Afterwards they warmed up with hot French toast and the rest of us ran. Throughout the day, the rain was on and off, which meant lots of card games, puzzling, Normatec-ing, and a trip into town. After a delicious dinner, we set team goals for each meet. To finish the day, we went back to competitive card games, friendship bracelets, and hanging out. :) Check back tomorrow for our last full day here in the North Woods! -- Tate Sweeney
Day Five: Tuesday, Aug. 27
Welcome back one last time, Gopher fans! Our third and final workout of camp was a hilly long run workout and it was a grind, but the squad killed it! We were treated to some delicious, hot minestrone soup after, which was a great way to warm up. Miraculously the weather held up for the most anticipated part of camp... the Gopher Olympics!! These comprised of a cut-throat round of lightning, a round of egg toss, and two rounds of Circle of Death. Donna & the Dynamos won, while setting a record high point score (woot woot!!). After one last dinner provided by the amazing staff here at Camp Voyageur, our final day wrapped up with some great traditions, including the freshmen skit, and a dance party complete with a guest performance of Shoop by Coach Hop. Thanks for checking in one last time, Gopher fans! -- Kelsey Sather
