THIS WEEK IN GOPHER SOCCER
The Minnesota soccer team welcomes fans back to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium this week as the Gophers host No.14 North Carolina State on Thursday evening before hosting South Dakota State for a Sunday afternoon matinee.
The two games feature a number of promotions for fans of the Maroon and Gold. Thursday will mark Autism Awareness night where the Gophers will host the Autism Society of Minnesota. The group will be present to talk with fans, deliver information, and supply fidgets.
Sunday will mark the Gophers second "Pups on the Pitch" where fans are welcomed to bring their dogs to the game where the first 75 dogs will receive a free Maroon and Gold dog collar. In addition, the six Gophers seniors will be recognized pregame as part of the Senior Day festivities.
SERIES HISTORY
The Gophers have only met the Wolfpack twice in program history while they have met South Dakota State nine times officially. Minnesota is 0-2 against the Wolfpack with the last meeting ending with an NC State victory on penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
The Maroon and Gold are undefeated against the Jackrabbits with eight victories and one scoreless draw. The Gophers have outscored their border opponents 24-1 and have not allowed an SDSU goal since 2006. The team's last meeting in 2015 ended with a 5-0 Gophers victory at home in the first round of the postseason.
BIG TEN NETWORK
Thursday's match will mark the first appearance for Minnesota on the Big Ten Network this season. The conference network will air the Gophers game against North Carolina State for fans with access to the channel nationwide.
Twice more this season the Gophers will appear on national television. Next, Minnesota hosts Nebraska on Oct. 17 which will be shown nationwide on ESPNU before the Gophers return to Big Ten Network when they take on Northwestern on Oct. 24 in Evanston, Illinois.
SENIOR DAY
Sunday will mark a celebration of the Gophers six seniors: Nikki Albrecht, Catherine Billings, Haley Hartkemeyer, Cachet Lue, TJ McKendrick, and Marisa Windingstad. The senior class was part of the two most recent Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2016 and 2018. The 2016 squad was also Big Ten Regular Season Champions and saw Albrecht, then a freshman, start all 23 games.
The six seniors have all played significant minute so far this campaign. Albrecht, Windingstad, and Lue have started all six of the Gophers thus far with Hartkemeyer and Billings also making an impact. McKendrick has been sidelined this season after appearing in nearly all games last season.
The six will be honored pregame with family members and friends.
NIELSEN SAVES
Goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen has shown off her skills in the net this season with 25 saves in six games. Nielsen has started every game for the Gophers this season with a save percentage of nearly 70 percent.
The junior from Shoreline, Washington, was the 2018 Big Ten Tournament defensive player after pitching consecutive shutouts to lead the Gophers on a great run to the title. The run appropriately culminated with a Nielsen save in penalty kicks for the sixth-seeded Gophers to defeat the top-ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State.
