Jess, Motl Win American Association Championship with Saints

MINNEAPOLIS – Former Gophers Jordan Jess and Dan Motl captured the American Association Championship on Saturday night as the St. Paul Saints swept the Sioux City Explorers in three games.
The Championship marks the Saints' first since the 2004 season and their first overall since joining the American Association. With Saturday's win, the Saints have now won five championships in their history.
Both Jess and Motl played vital roles in powering the Saints to a 2019 title. Motl had a career year at the plate, slashing .328/.416/.421 with four homers, 74 runs, 42 RBI and 24 steals. He also chipped in two hits and a walk in game one of the championship series.
Jess was one of the Saints' best starting pitchers down the stretch, finishing with a 7-1 record and a 3.84 ERA in 75 innings.
