ST. PAUL – The Minnesota soccer team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night with a 1-0 overtime loss to Penn State.
While the Gophers led the game in shots on goal for most of the way, Penn State's Ally Schlegel scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute of the first extra period.
"It's really easy for this to break a team and for them to stop showing up while going through the motions, but it's clear we're not doing that," head coach Stef Golan said. "We're trying to fight our way into the Big Ten Tournament. From that point on anything is possible."
The Gophers welcomed the 1,408 in attendance to "Rock the Robbie" night that also featured the return of over a dozen former Gophers for alumni night.Â
Juniors Makenzie Langdok and Athena Kuehn led the Gophers combining for six of the Maroon and Gold's ten shots. Despite being a backline player, Kuehn was a force at the top of the Gophers formation for most of the evening.
After the game, senior co-captain NIkki Albreht praised Kuehn's physicality attatcking and the impact she had on the Nittany Lion's defenders.Â
The Gophers had seven corner kicks on the night, the team's second highest total on the season.Their consistent offensive pressure gave the Gophers a 54 percent possession advantage throughout the game.Â
