Gophers Offense Propels ‘U’ to Big Ten Victory

The Minnesota soccer team defeated Ohio State 1-0 for their first conference win of the season on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Junior Athena Kuehn, who has now scored both of the Gophers' last two goals, found paydirt in the 11th minute with a well-timed shot to the bottom corner. Forward Patricia Ward assisted Kuehn's on a beautiful cross from the right side.
"After the game coach told us to let that weight off our shoulders and we can move forward," Kuehn said.
From there the Gophers poured on the shots with 15 in the second half to bring their total for the game up to 24. It was the best offensive performance of the season for the Gophers who were led by Ward and Kuehn, who combined for 11 of those shots. It's also the Gophers first victory this season when leading at halftime, having more shots than the opponent, and while wearing white.
The Gophers also held the advantage in corner kicks (5-3) and in free kicks (10-6).
Conversely, the Buckeyes mustered only five total shots and only two on target that goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen saved with ease.
"We had 24 shots, so really great confidence from the forwards moving forward," senior co-captain Marisa Windingstad said. "Defensively we didn't give up a lot. Both sides of the ball are doing their job really well.
The game featured a pregame celebration for the 20th anniversary of Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The celebration featured remarks from Athletic Director Mark Coyle, University President Joan Gabel, and Robbie's daughter, Deborah Olson.
With 1,204 in attendance on Sunday, the Gophers total attendance this weekend crossed 2,600 for the best total this season.
