Wiskus Headed for World Gymnastics Championships

Before he suits up for his third season with the maroon and gold, Shane Wiskus will represent the red, white and blue. The Gophers junior has qualified for the USA Gymnastics World Championships team, USA Gymnastics announced on Saturday.

The team will compete at the event in Stuttgart, Germany, October 4-13. It is the last opportunity for the United States to qualify a team in nine remaining spots for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The team consists of Wiskus, Sam Mikulak (U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center/University of Michigan), Trevor Howard (Ohio State University), Akash Modi (Stanford University), Yul Moldauer (University of Oklahoma) and Allan Bower (University of Oklahoma), who will serve as the traveling alternate. Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams will lead the U.S. contingent.

Of all the team members, Wiskus is the youngest and the only active college gymnast. He made an impressive run at the Worlds Selection Camp over the weekend, coming in third place all-around with a two-day score of 166.900. He also placed in the top three in three of Saturday's events: floor (third, 14.150), parallel bars (second, 14.650) and high bar (third, 13.650).

In addition to the weekend's competition, world team members were also selected based on their performances at August's U.S. National Championships, where Wiskus placed fourth all-around with a score of 167.600, earned the vault national title, and placed third on parallel bars.

Wiskus held his own in an incredibly deep field with gymnasts like two-time Olympian Sam Mikulak and finished third overall with Selection Camp and National Championships scores combined, with a score of 334.500 through 24 routines.

The Spring Park, Minn. native is a two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and the reigning NCAA parallel bar national champion. He will also serve as captain for Minnesota in his junior season.

Shane will join Gopher alum Justin Karstadt in Stuttgart, who recently qualified for World Championships with his native Team Canada. Men's team competition at the World Championships starts with qualification on Oct. 7, with team finals set for Oct. 9. The men's all-around final and event finals will come after, Oct. 11-13.
