INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – A standout performance from junior Angus Flanagan was the highlight for Minnesota on the rainy opening day of the 15th annual Gopher Invitational, Sunday at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
Flanagan used eight birdies, including six straight on the back nine, to tie a career low with a 65 in the second round. It was the second time reaching 65 in his career, making him just one of four golfers in program history to have multiple rounds of 65 or lower in a career along with Rúnar Arnórsson, Bronson La'Cassie and James McLean.
The round also tied for the best by any golfer in Gopher Invitational history since the tournament moved to Windsong Farm in 2013, and it tied for the second best score in the history of the tournament.
Flanagan (78-65), senior Noah Rasinski (69-74) and freshman Connor Glynn (73-70), who was competing as an individual, were the top Gopher performers Sunday as each posted a 1-over 143 through 36 holes.

The Golden Gophers are in 10th place as a team after posting a 12-over par score of 580, while Baylor leads the field at 8-under 560. Defending tournament co-champion Wiliam Buhl is the 36-hole leader with a 7-under 135, while Baylor's Johnny Keefer is one shot back and West Virginia's Nico Lang and Marquette's Tyler Leach are two behind.
Minnesota tees off in the final round Monday at 7:30 a.m. off the 10th hole."Early on it was a bit of a struggle, a lot of teams were struggling," first-year Minnesota head coach Justin Smith said. "It was tough out there with a little bit of wind and some rain; the golf course is hard. Windsong plays hard no matter how you try to set it up, we try to make it so we all get done and create that experience for other teams.
"I was a little disappointed in how we started. The weather was a little rough so you gotta really dig deep. They weren't at their best clearly. We certainly played well on the back, but the way we responded this afternoon is a big testament to how well this team's wired. Lincoln Johnson had a great comeback, and obviously what Angus did is at a level as good as anybody in the country. Now it's just figuring out how to get him to do that more and be at that level and play with the players that he did all day.
"All in all from a scorewise and how we gutted it out and some of the players, we have to clean up around the greens and get more out of our games that way. We have another great opportunity tomorrow to beat some really great teams, because this field is stellar."
