Gophers Battle Hard But Fall to No.5 Virginia
9/8/2019 1:09:00 PM | Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Gopher soccer team fell to No.5 Virginia Cavaliers 2-0 at Klöckner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The game marked the first time the Cavaliers have been held scoreless in the opening half this season after previously outscoring their opponents 9-0 in the first half through five games. Overall, the two goals is tied for the lowest total for the Cavaliers this season.
"I'm definitely really proud of the grit and fight we had today," head coach Stef Golan said. "We went in today with a gameplan and Virginia is one of the best teams in the country. We knew what they wanted to do with their attack so we were trying to minimize their opportunity to do so. We wanted to force them to have to play central a bit and not get at us in the flank."
The Cavaliers launched 23 shots throughout the game but the Gophers remained poised on the backline to withstand the persistent attack. Minnesota's backline showed off their strength throughout the match clearing out centering passes and stifling the Cavaliers' attacks.
The first goal of the game came in the 78th minute when Ashlynn Serepca launched a ball from outside of the box that bounced off the crossbar and fell less than a foot behind the line. The Cavaliers tacked on an insurance goal just five minutes later with another goal from distance.
Nielsen made her first save fourteen minutes into the game and proceeded to save five shots throughout the game, include a pair in the scoreless first half.
At the top the Gophers were led by Patricia Ward and Haley Hartkemeyer, who had the Gophers lone shot. Hartkemeyer received a cross from Ward in the box and, after allowing it to bounce, she knocked the ball at the Cavaliers for an eventual corner kick.
Defender Nikki Albrecht also contributed offensively with several great runs down the flank to jump-start the Maroon and Gold attack.
