MINNEAPOLIS – Gopher Hockey's Jared Moe has been tabbed the Big Ten Third Star of the Week after picking up his first career shutout and allowing just one goal in nearly 100 minutes of action over the weekend at No. 20 Michigan State.
A native of New Prague, Minn., Moe blanked the Spartans in a 2-0 win on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena as the freshman recorded the first Gophers shutout in over a year (Eric Schierhorn in a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Nov. 17, 2018). The goaltender made 28 saves on 28 shots including a third period breakaway in the third period while also backstopping the Maroon & Gold through a 5-on-3 opportunity to close out the second period. Both situations came with Minnesota holding a 1-0 lead before adding an empty-net tally in the final moments of the game. Moe also made 14 saves on 15 shots over the final 40 minutes of action on Friday night.
With 52 saves on 53 shots over the weekend, Moe held a .977 save percentage and a 0.60 GAA for the series – both figures rank among the top-10 performances in the nation for the last week.
In 12 games this season, Moe owns a .909 save percentage, a 2.62 GAA and a record of 4-4-1. This is Moe's first career honor from the Big Ten.
The Gophers goaltending corps has now earned back-to-back honors from the league as Jack LaFontaine was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week on Jan. 7.
Up Next: U.S. Exhibition Game at 3M Arena at Mariucci
The Gophers host the U.S. Under-18 Team for an exhibition game at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. CT (Stream: BTN PLUS).
