Gophers Host Skate the Cities Event in Blaine

MINNEAPOLIS – A snowstorm late last month might have delayed the event, but the Gopher Hockey program was finally able to kick off this season's Skate the Cities series on Monday night with a stop at Fogerty Arena in Blaine.
A day after arriving home from a two-game Big Ten road trip at Michigan State, the Maroon & Gold hosted an open practice and fan skate in the Twin Cities suburb as well as a bit of a homecoming for freshman forward Bryce Brodzinski.
"It's good to be back," Brodzinski, who captained Blaine High School's boys program last year while earning the Mr. Hockey Award and the All-USA Boys Athlete of the Year honor, said. "I've been in Blaine my entire life – just coming up through the youth organization with my brothers. It's pretty cool to be in a position where people look up to me, and it's pretty cool to be back."
While Brodzinski's homecoming in Blaine made Monday night's event extra special, Gophers head coach Bob Motzko has enjoyed all of the Skate the Cities stops in his two years with the Gophers.
"I like being around the kids and having the young kids around the program," Motzko said. "Minnesota is such a great state with all the youth hockey associations and all our volunteers working to grow the game. It's great to get out and have a chance to practice in front of them and have some fun with them."
The Gophers will conclude this year's Skate the Cities series with an open skate at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday, Jan. 19 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. CT as part of the Hockey Day Minnesota festivities. The event is free and open to the public (tickets are no longer required). Participants must bring their own skates.

The Gophers host the U.S. Under-18 Team for an exhibition game at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. CT (Stream: BTN PLUS).
