McManus Named NCAA and Big Ten First Star, Ranta Named Big Ten Second Star

MINNEAPOLIS – After leading the nation in scoring last weekend, Gopher Hockey's Brannon McManus has been named the NCAA First Star of the Week and the Big Ten First Star of the Week while line mate Sampo Ranta has been tabbed the Big Ten Third Star of the Week.
A native of Newport Beach, Calif., McManus posted back-to-back three-point games for the Maroon & Gold, finishing with a nation-leading six points on the weekend as Minnesota swept No. 6 Ohio State at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The junior forward currently leads the Gophers with 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) this season. McManus tied for third in the nation last week with a plus-six rating. The Gophers are 10-1-1 all-time when he records a multi-point performance.
A native of Naantali, Finland, Ranta posted four points for the Maroon & Gold in the sweep and tied for the NCAA lead with three goals over the weekend. The sophomore also tied for the NCAA lead in plus-minus at plus-seven, sharing the lead with teammate Ryan Zuhlsdorf. Ranta recorded his first career multi-goal goal in Friday's win over the Buckeyes before adding another goal and an assist on Saturday – the Maroon & Gold are 5-0-0 all-time when he records a multi-point performance. The sophomore forward has 15 points (10 goals, five assists) for Minnesota this year.
The line of McManus, Ranta and freshman forward Ben Meyers contributed seven of Minnesota's 10 goals and 14 of the team's 24 points over the weekend as the Gophers earned their first Big Ten sweep of the season. The Maroon & Gold had not recorded a three-point performance this season heading into the weekend (22 games) before leaving the series with three of them (McManus with two, Meyers with one).
Minnesota has now won five of its last six games including four-straight contests at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
