After collecting its first meet win at home last weekend, the No. 10 Minnesota men's gymnastics team is on the road again for a tri-meet against No. 9 Iowa and No. 19 UIC.
The Gophers are looking to keep their momentum alive after coming away with a season-best score of 402.800 and new highs on floor (66.950) and parallel bars (70.150) against Illinois.
The meet should be a tight contest. Minnesota has higher averages over Iowa on rings (66.200), vault (70.017) and parallel bars (67.450), while the Hawkeyes hold slight advantages against the Gophers in the other three events.
"Iowa always comes in strong when we go down there, so it's going to be a challenge," head coach Mike Burns said. "We've always done pretty well, but the energy that we had last weekend in the Pavilion, we've got to find a way to package that and bring it on the road with us."
Minnesota will also compete against UIC, and the Gophers have already seen both opponents this season at the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 18. The maroon and gold placed second at Windy City (398.650), with Iowa coming in fourth (393.100) and UIC in fifth (358.650).
"I expect it to be a little bit more of a relaxed meet," freshman Valen Watrous said. "We'll throw in some upgrades, have some fun, but also it'll be high energy and very exciting."
The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Live streaming will be broadcast by BTN+ (subscription required) and the University of Iowa will provide live streaming, available prior to the meet. Fans can follow Minnesota Men's Gymnastics on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all meet updates and links.
Last Time Out
The Gophers were back at the Pav and the home gym advantage paid off. Minnesota set a new season-high team score of 402.800 to win a close dual over Illinois in what was also the first meet of the Big Ten regular season. The biggest highlight came in the Gophers' parallel bars rotation, where each of the six men up stuck their routines and the team set a then-national best score of 70.150. The mark was only topped over the weekend by defending national champion Stanford. Junior captain Shane Wiskus won the event title with a No. 2 score of 15.100, Minnesota's best since 2017, and also won the all-around with a career-best and national high 84.600. He finished with the floor title as well and silvers on vault and rings. Senior captain Timmy Kutyla won his first-ever event title on high bar (13.850) and took third on p-bars (13.750).
Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota is currently ranked No. 10 as a team and is in the top 10 on five events: No. 3 on parallel bars, No. 5 on rings, No. 8 on vault and No. 10 on floor and pommel horse. Wiskus remains atop the rankings as the No. 1 all-arounder and on parallel bars and has moved to No. 4 on floor and rings and No. 15 on vault. Kutyla's consistent season has rewarded him the No. 2 spot on high bar and No. 15 on parallel bars and sophomore David Pochinka comes in at No. 3 on parallel bars.
The Road Ahead
The Gophers return home for a dual meet against the University of Washington Huskies on Friday, Feb. 7 at Maturi Pavilion. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will feature a 10.0 scoring system. It is also Goldy's Kid's Club Day at the Pav, members will receive free admission with a discount for parents, and will get the opportunity to take part in a handstand competition with the team. Single meet tickets are now available through Gopher Sports.
