The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its preseason national ranking index Wednesday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ayesha Champagnie enters the 2020 NCAA indoor track & field season as the nation's top returner in the women's long jump -- one of 17 Gopher track & field student-athletes to earn rankings on the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Rating Index, released this week by the organization.

The Gophers will start the season ranked No. 7 in the women's indoor track & field national rating index while Minnesota ranks 30th in the men's indoor track & field national rating index.

Women's Recap
Led by Champagnie's number-one ranking in long jump, the Minnesota women open the season ranked No. 7 in the nation. Champagnie's career-best long jump mark of 6.56 meters (21-06.25 ft.) was set during the 2018 season; she also comes in 17th in the pentathlon with a season-opening score of 3,934 points at the 2019 SDSU Holiday Invite and Multi. Hannah Arason ranks 30th in the pentathlon (3,851 points) as well.

Shot put is the Gopher women's deepest event according to the USTFCCCA preseason rankings where four Gophers are among the nation's top-32 individuals. Newcomer Devia Brown leads the way in third with a mark of 17.76 meters (58-03.25 ft.) set last season while competing for Central Arizona College. Nayoka Clunis's season-opening mark of 17.05 meters (55-11.25) places her seventh while Tess Keyzers is 17th (16.55 meters, 54-03.75 ft.) and Shay Nielsen is 32nd (15.91 meters, 52-02.50).

In women's weight throw, Clunis (21.48 meters, 70-05.75 ft.) and Keyzers (21.27 meters, 69-09.50 ft.) come in 12th and 14th, respectively.

On the track, Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz both come in among the nation's top-30. B. Hasz ranks fourth in the 5,000-meter run (15:25.33) and 27th in the 3,000 meters (9:11.46) while M. Hasz is 16th in the 5,000 meters (15:39.03).

Men's Recap
The Gopher men fell just outside of the national rankings at 30th in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Rating Index with nine competitors nationally ranked.

The men's weight throw led the way as three Gophers were among the top-30 nationally in the event including Kieran McKeag, who ranked fourth at 21.97 meters (72-01.00 ft.) to lead all Maroon & Gold student-athletes. Jon Nerdal comes in at No. 14 at 21.15 meters (69-04.75 ft.) while Connor Rousemiller ranks 28th at 20.32 meters (66-08.00 ft.).

The Gophers also picked up multiple representatives in the heptathlon as Teddy Frid comes in at No. 11 with a performance of 5,717 while newcomer Ben Ose sits in 25th at 5,454 points.
