Gopher alums Sydney Baldwin, Amanda Leveille, and Nicole Schammel have been selected for the 2020 NWHL All-Star Weekend.
MINNEAPOLIS -- A trio of Golden Gopher alumnae are among the players selected for the 2020 NWHL All-Star Weekend. University of Minnesota alumnae Sydney Baldwin, Amanda Leveille, and Nicole Schammel have been chosen to participate in the league's fifth-annual all-star celebration, the NWHL announced Thursday.
Schammel was chosen to skate for Team Dempsey while Baldwin and Leveille will play for Team Packer. Each team has 14 skaters and two goaltenders.
In celebration of the league's five seasons, the 2020 NWHL All-Star Weekend will be held in Boston, one of the league's original markets and home of some of the most dedicated fans in the game. The weekend's events will be held at Warrior Ice Arena, the home venue of the Boston Pride. The All-Star celebration during the league's fifth season is the first one in an existing NWHL market since the inaugural All-Star Game in Buffalo in 2016. Previous events were held in Pittsburgh (2017) and Minnesota (2018) and Nashville (2019).
The 2020 NWHL All-Star Game is on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m. CT. The All-Star Skills Challenge which includes the Fastest Skater and Hardest Shot competitions, is on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. CT. Both events will be broadcast live on Twitch (twitch.tv/nwhl) with announcers Kelly Schultz, Alexis Pearson, Erica Ayala and Sam Fryman. Tickets for the All-Star Game and Skills Challenge are on sale now.
The first eight all-stars were selected by Commissioner Dani Rylan and the league office. In honor of their extraordinary efforts for hockey, the following players with the league from the first NWHL season through today were designated as 2020 NWHL All-Stars: Corinne Buie of the Buffalo Beauts; Jordan Brickner, Shannon Doyle and Elena Orlando of the Connecticut Whale; Jillian Dempsey and Kaleigh Fratkin of the Boston Pride; and Kiira Dosdall and Madison Packer of the Metropolitan Riveters. The league chose Dempsey and Packer as all-star captains. Three players were named all-stars following a fan vote, and the team captains selected the remaining all-star rosters.
