Gopher Baseball to Host Virtual Scout Week From Oct. 19-24

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota baseball program announced Friday that the team will hold its first-ever Virtual Scout Week from Oct. 19-24.
Throughout Virtual Scout Week, Gopher Baseball will share up-to-date analytics, statistics and bio information on the program's crop of 2021 draft-eligible position players. Each day, two-to-three players will be showcased on social media, with a Virtual Scout Week landing page on GopherSports.com providing further information on each individual player.
"Gopher Baseball is proud to host the first-ever Virtual Scout Week on social media this October," said head coach John Anderson. "The genesis of this concept comes from the fact that we want the absolute best for our student-athletes and wish to promote them in a way that is consistent with our program's core values and for their future professional opportunities."
During a normal fall baseball season, Minnesota would host a Scout Day on-site at Siebert Field in the form of a live scrimmage against collegiate competition. Scouts across the region are typically invited to attend and gather data on the program's players as they go head-to-head on the diamond. Although that will not be possible due to the uniqueness of the Fall 2020 season, Virtual Scout Week allows Gopher Baseball to provide a similar experience for interested scouts while giving the program's talented players the opportunity to showcase themselves.
"COVID-19 has presented many challenges to our sport over the last seven months, but with the creative minds we have in Gopher Baseball and the data collection we utilize with video, analytics, statistical gathering and metrical data, we felt that this was the perfect opportunity to not only showcase our student-athletes, but promote the work of our very gifted student managers," said Anderson. "I want to take this chance to single out two individuals who have made Virtual Scout Week possible: Sullivan Bortner, one of the best and brightest young minds in the sports information industry, and Thomas Knauss, our head student manager, who has provided unprecedented work behind the scenes in Gopher Baseball for the past three years. Both of these two are the best at what they do and none of this is possible without their work."
Data that will be shared throughout Virtual Scout Week includes: bat speed, rotational acceleration, power output, time to contact, exit velocity, on-plane efficiency, home-to-first times, outfield throwing velocity, past in-game statistics, career accolades and more. All of this information was gathered with the use of Gopher Baseball's state-of-the art technology, including BLAST Motion, K-Vest, HitTrax, Inside Edge, Trackman and Rapsodo.
Below is the complete schedule for Virtual Scout Week, which will span from Oct. 19-24.
