MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's basketball team announced its three captains for the 2020-21 season on Monday: redshirt junior Marcus Carr, junior Gabe Kalscheur and redshirt senior Eric Curry. The trio was chosen based on player voting.
Carr, who was a co-captain last season with Michael Hurt, is coming off a sophomore season where he set school records with 207 assists, including 130 during conference action en route to being named to the All-Big Ten Third Team. He finished the year second in the conference and ninth nationally with 6.7 assists per game, and tied for second with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.5.
Named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-Big Ten Team earlier this year, Carr led the conference in minutes played last year, starting every game and averaging nearly 37 minutes of court time per contest to rank ninth nationally. He also ranked second on the Gophers, and eighth in the Big Ten, in scoring 15.4 points per game. The Toronto, Ontario, native had 24 games with double-digit scoring including eight 20-point outings and four double-doubles.
Kalscheur started every game last year and ranked third on the team in scoring (11.6) while leading the team in steals (31). He led the Big Ten in 3-pointers made (76) and attempted per game (7.2). The Edina, Minn., native had 17 games of double-digit scoring, including three of at least 20 points, highlighted by a 34-point effort against Oklahoma State on Dec. 21 which earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors.
Curry missed all of last season after suffering a knee injury in October of 2019. This came after he had to take a medical redshirt during the 2017-18 campaign due to a separate knee injury. He sat out the first 12 games of 2018-19, but played in 15 contests during the year with five starts. He averaged 4.1 points and 3.1 rebounds while averaging 18.7 minutes per game. For his career, the Memphis, Tenn., native has played in Â49 games with six starts, posting averages of 5.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest.
